Curly Hair Styling Tips
By Susan M. Keenan © 2007

Whether you are blessed with naturally curly hair or you simply want to indulge in a full set of curly locks for a new look, there’s so much that you can do with curls. From tight curls to loose curls to short curly hairstyles to long curly hairstyles, you could try something different for a month of Sundays and still have something cute and sassy.

Curly hair is often one of a woman’s best features. Unfortunately, it doesn’t always seem like it simply because gorgeous tresses with lots of curl aren’t always the easiest to care for. In fact, curly hair screams for a different kind of treatment than any other type of hair.

Unlike straight hair, if taken care of properly, curly hair will elicit many comments asking whether your hair is a perm or if it is naturally curly. However, your tresses should see the inside of a beauty parlor if only to receive a proper cut. A hair stylist who is familiar with your hair will know how to trim it properly as well as how to style it for a becoming and flattering look.

One of the nicest facets of curly hair is that it does not need hours and hours of brushing and combing. In fact, once you brush out the knots, allow your hair to manage on its own. A comb with wide teeth or a hair pick are actually the best way to deal with curly locks. They are easier on your hair than a comb with narrow teeth or a brush with lots of bristles.

Curly hair does need to be nurtured though, so make sure that you use the right products on it. A good moisturizing shampoo and conditioner will work wonders for your hair. Avoid unnecessary handling of your hair, especially when it is wet, since this is when most damage occurs. If your hair becomes overly frizzy or if it is getting dry, quite possibly due to too much changing of its color, try a deep conditioning treatment about every four weeks. It’s important to return your hair to its natural state if you want manageable hair.

Avoid blow drying your hair whenever possibly since this is extremely harsh on your hair. It is simply too harsh for curly hair that tends to be dry and frizzy in the first place. Allow your hair to dry naturally or use a diffuser.

If you aren’t blessed with naturally curly hair, you can still have a curly hairstyle. Invest in a set of hot rollers for a quick style of bouncy curls. The hot rollers are quick and easy to use. Piece your curls the way that you want them to look prior to applying any hair styling products. If your hair doesn’t respond well to being placed in curls, spray each strand with a bit of hair spray before you roll it.

You can also set your hair overnight with curlers. For a tighter curl, use small, narrow curlers and for a looser curl, use wider curlers. Typically, the curls will set better if you wash your hair before setting it. Simply allow your hair to dry partially before setting it. The best advice is to try a few different styling techniques, several sizes of curls, and a professional stylist to figure out what works best for you.
